Roses are the flower we get asked about more than any other, and it's not hard to see why. They carry more meaning per stem than almost anything else in the shop, they come in a colour for every occasion, and a good rose will hold its shape for a full week or longer in the vase. We work with roses every single day at Flowers Gold Coast, and after years of arranging them for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, sympathies and the occasional apology, we've picked up a few things worth sharing.
Rose varieties we work with
When most people picture a rose, they're picturing a classic long-stem red rose. That's one variety of many. The rose family is huge, and the varieties we use in our bouquets each bring something different.
- Long-stem roses. The tall, single-bloom-per-stem rose you'd expect in a dozen-rose bouquet. Elegant, dramatic, and the go-to for anniversaries and romance.
- Spray roses. Smaller heads with multiple blooms on a single stem. Perfect for texture in mixed bouquets and for delicate posy-style arrangements.
- Garden roses and David Austin roses. Ruffled, romantic, and heavily petalled. These have the vintage look people love in weddings, and they carry a genuine fragrance that modern hybrids often don't.
- Sweetheart roses. A smaller, more compact bloom. Beautiful in posies and gift arrangements where a full-size head would be too much.

What rose colours mean
Rose colour meanings have been around for centuries, and while nobody's going to check your work, choosing the right colour adds a layer of thought to the gift.
- Red. Love, romance, deep passion. The classic anniversary and Valentine's choice.
- Pink. Grace, admiration, gentle appreciation. A softer romantic option, and lovely for birthdays.
- White. Purity, sympathy, remembrance. Common in bridal work and funeral arrangements.
- Yellow. Friendship, joy, warmth. A great "thinking of you" or congratulations pick.
- Peach and coral. Gratitude and sincerity. Wonderful for thank-you gifts.
- Lavender. Enchantment, love at first sight. A less common colour that always makes a bouquet feel special.
- Burgundy and near-black. Devotion, deep affection, and a moodier take on romance.
When roses are in season on the Gold Coast
Here's some good news. Roses are available year-round in Australia. We source ours from a mix of local and imported growers, so no matter the month, we can put together a rose bouquet for same-day delivery on the Gold Coast. Peak local season for hybrid tea roses runs through spring and early summer, and quality is at its absolute best from around September through December.
How to make cut roses last
A well-cared-for rose bouquet will give you seven to ten days in the vase, and often longer. A few small habits make a big difference.
- Trim two to three centimetres off each stem on an angle before you put them in water. This opens the cut surface and lets the rose drink properly.
- Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline. Leaves in water rot fast, and rot is what shortens vase life.
- Change the water every second day and give the stems a fresh cut each time.
- Keep the vase out of direct sun and away from fruit bowls. Ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which ages cut flowers quickly.
- Use the flower food sachet that comes with your bouquet. It's not marketing filler, it genuinely extends vase life.

When to gift roses
Roses work for almost every occasion, but here's how we think about matching them to a moment.
Anniversaries and romance. A classic dozen red roses is still one of the strongest gifts you can send. If you want something a bit different, a mixed rose bouquet in blush and burgundy reads romantic without leaning on cliché.
Birthdays. Pink, peach or a mixed colour rose bouquet feels celebratory without being over the top. Add other seasonal blooms for texture.
Sympathy. White roses are one of the most traditional and appropriate sympathy flowers. Soft, respectful, and never wrong.
Thank you or congratulations. Yellow, peach or coral roses carry warmth without romantic weight, which makes them ideal for gifts to friends, colleagues or family.
